Some time ago, my colleagues and I popped by the Intercontinental Hotel for a couple of drinks. There was live jazz music being performed as we sat and I really enjoyed it. I'm thinking of picking up a couple of jazz cd's, and wonder if anyone out there has good recommendations?

Well, there are many kinds of jazz music. Tell me more about what you heard that day and what you liked about it? Was someone singing? Was it laidback and chill, or did it make you tap your feet and want to dance? were there a lot of instruments or just a few? Was it modern and interesting and thoughtprovoking, or nostalgic, reminding you of better days gone by? etc etc.... it'll help us recommend stuff you're likely to like. =)

it was semi-fast, wanna tap my foot and hand on my thigh to the music.. someone singing.. there was piano and percussion.. cant remember if there was saxophone though, maybe not so much. it was more yester-year type of songs.

If it was the piano and percussion feel you liked, try some Oscar Peterson or some other piano trios (or piano trio + featured guest -- e.g. OP trio + Stan Getz, or Lester Young). Diana Krall's CDs are the same kind of small jazz combo, and she sings too.

If you like girl voices, Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae have recorded a lot - a LOT - of yesteryear type songs with small jazz combos or big bands, and they're almost all good. It's hard to go wrong with Ella and Carmen. (I'm not as much a fan of Sarah Vaughn, but she's the third member of the trinity, if you come across her.)

good enough a place to start? =)

I think that was most likely a double bass. And it was plucked rather than fiddled right? I can lend you a few recordings if you like. My stuff is mainly old school compilations by Ella and Louis Armstrong. Hey let's go to Jazz@Southbridge one day. I've not been for some time. See if you like the music there :)

"jazz" is kinda vague.. what kind of jazz are you looking for?

i would no doubtly recommend miles davis' "kind of blue", in any case.
